Working from home

Advances in technology mean that many kinds of businesses can be run from home and home based working now plays an important role in West Oxfordshire's economy.  Generally the costs are lower, you can avoid travel expenses and have the freedom and flexibility to work the hours you choose in an environment that you create yourself. It is a common choice for people who just need a small office, or who spend most of their time working at premises owned by their clients.  Home-based businesses are just as eligible to receive support and advice as any other business.

People are often concerned about the planning and business rates implications of working from home.  Every situation is different but, generally, the rules are as follows:

Planning permission
An office within your home would not generally need planning permission unless staff are employed or a dedicated separate building is used.  Planning permission is needed if there is a change in the residential character of your home, or if your business is likely to impact on neighbours (for example, traffic, noise).
For more information email planning@westoxon.gov.uk or call 01993 861420.

Business rates
Business rates are payable on areas of your home that are exclusively used for business. Therefore, an office that also serves as a spare bedroom would not be liable for business rates. If business rates are payable on parts of your home, your council tax band may be reduced.

Business support
There is a whole range of support available for businesses in West Oxfordshire.  Please see the Business support page for more details.

Networking
One downside of working from home is that it can feel isolated.  Networking is a great way to both meet other likeminded people but also generate new business leads.  Oxfordshire Rural Community Council is helping people to establish new business networks in villages.
Please download the Flyer for more information and contact details.
