Trading Standards for Market Stalls

1. All stalls should display the business name and address.

2. The law determines how produce can be sold e.g. by number, weight or bunch. If produce is to be sold by weight, it must be weighed using a government approved scale, which has been tested and stamped by an approved body.

3. Stallholders must display prices of their produce in a clearly visible position, in metric.

4. Specified guidelines relating to loose produce, organic produce, and prepared goods such as jams, chocolate and honey must be adhered to. More advice is available for Trading Standards.

5. The description 'Organic'  can only be used on produce that is produced in accordance with laid down standards and certified by an authorised body.

6. Where beef is sold, the traceability information must be displayed, including the following: the country of origin, reference number, slaughterhouse and cutting plant number.

7. If stallholders sell meat products, the percentage meat must be displayed either on the packaging (pre-packed products) or on a notice (loose products).
