Gas Safety
When safely installed, regularly maintained and used properly, gas installations and appliances pose few risks. However, if gas is not managed properly then the risk of fire or an explosion or carbon monoxide poisoning is greatly increased.
If you use either mains gas or LPG, you should be aware of the following requirements:
- CORGI registered fitters - Gas work can only be carried out by people who are CORGI Registered. You can check an individual's CORGI identity card or contact CORGI to check the person is competent for the work being carried out. For information on CORGI registered engineers, contact CORGI, 1 Elmwood, Chineham Business Park, Crockford Lane, Basingstoke, Hants RG24 BWG. Telephone 01256 372300.
- Assessing training needs for staff - All staff using gas appliances should be instructed in their proper use. Where LPG cylinders are used, staff required to change the cylinders will need training.
- Routine servicing and inspection of appliances - Appliances must be inspected regularly by a competent person. The frequency of inspection will depend on the equipment and its use. Usually an annual inspection will be required.
- Ensuring adequate ventilation - Gas appliances should be adequately ventilated to remove fumes from the room to the outside. In some circumstances, where a ventilation canopy is fitted, there may be a requirement for the provision of an interlock which would shut off the gas supply to an appliance in the event of an air movement failure.
