On March 31st 2009 the Government announced that it intends to introduce legislation to enable businesses to defer payment of 60% of the increase in their 2009-10 bill until 2010-11 and 2011-12. We have written to all businesses to tell them about these proposed changes.
It is expected that the new regulations will be in place in July 2009. Until then you must continue to pay the rates shown on your most recent bill. However, if you are struggling to pay, please email Revenues & Benefits Service or call 01993 861070 as we may be able to agree an alternative payment plan or give you information about other assistance that may help you.
We will write to businesses when the new legislation is in place to let them know the details and how to apply.
The following examples are based on the information we have at the moment are illustrate how we believe the scheme will operate.
Example 1
Property with RV £45,500.00
Rates payable for 2008/09 £21,021.00
Rates payable for 2009/10 £22,067.50
Increase in rates payable £1051.05
60% of the increase can be deferred. This means that £630.63 of the total 2009/10 charge can be deferred with £315.32 being payable in addition to the 2010/11 rates and £315.31 payable in addition to the 2011/12 rates.
Example 2
Property with RV £4,450.00
Rates payable for 2008/09 after transitional relief £729.34
Rates payable for 2009/10 £2,158.25
Increase in rates payable £1,428.91
60% of the increase may be deferred. This means that £857.35 of the total 2009/10 charge can be deferred with £428.68 being payable in addition to the 2010/11 rates and £428.67 payable in addition to the 2011/12 rates.
