Twelve seats on the County Council which cover the area of West Oxfordshire were up for election, and ten Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) were also to be elected for the South East Region. Turnout was around 42%.

A summary of the results for the West Oxfordshire area is available from the County Council Election Results page of this website, and results for the whole of Oxfordshire are available from the County Council's website.

The European Parliamentary election result for the West Oxfordshire area is available from the European Parliamentary Election Results page of this website, as is the result for the whole of the South East region.

Local Government Elections

Local Government elections usually take place on the first Thursday of May each year. In 2010, 2011 and 2012 elections are due for the District Council and Parish Councils. In 2009 the elections will be for the Oxfordshire County Council, but the date has been delayed to coincide with the European Parliamentary elections and election day will be Thursday, 4th June.

The District Council's elections are by thirds, and of the 49 seats on the Council, 16 will be up for election in each of 2010 and 2011, and 17 in 2012.  The term of office for Councillors elected on these dates will be four years. See Electoral Cycle for full details of the cycle of District and Parish Council elections.

For information about the years in which Town and Parish Councils have elections, please see Parish & Town Council Election Years.

Parliamentary Elections

Parliamentary elections are not held on fixed dates and can be up to five years apart. The next general election will take place not later than May 2010.

European Parliamentary Elections

West Oxfordshire District and the Witney Constituency are part of the South East Region for European elections. The Region returns a total of 10 MEPs.

European Parliamentary Elections take place every five years, with polling day for the next being Thursday, 4th June 2009. Additional information on this is also available from the BBC website
