Asbestos Disposal

The information below only relates to asbestos cement products such as guttering and corrugated sheeting on domestic premises. Work on non-domestic properties or involving any other materials containing asbestos such as lagging and insulation, including removal, must only be undertaken by a licensed contractor. A list of licence holders and further information about working with asbestos is available on the Health and Safety Executive's Asbestos Topic Page. The Council does not provide a collection or disposal service.

If you wish to "Do it yourself", then follow these points:

  1. Wear protective clothing (preferably disposable) i.e. overalls, gloves, and a suitable dust mask (with a CE mark).
  2. Damp the asbestos cement down well.
  3. Avoid breaking, sawing, damaging or roughening the asbestos cement to reduce the release of fibres.
  4. If there are any fastenings dampen these and remove, avoiding damaging or roughening the asbestos cement (e.g. unbolt or use bolt cutters).
  5. Check for debris in fasteners and bolt holes. Clean these with a wet cloth.
  6. Lower sheets etc to the ground.
  7. Double wrap the products with plastic sheeting (at least 400 gauge).
  8. Use a wet cloth to clean equipment used and the area.
  9. Place any cloths etc used and disposable protective clothing in double polythene bags.

You can take small quantities to one of the following disposal sites yourself. These are the only sites in Oxfordshire where you can take asbestos cement products.

You must telephone before visiting to ensure that they have the space to take your waste. They will only accept small quantities (8 sheets maximum).

Disposing of large quantities may require a licence. The Environment Agency can advise if you phone 08708 506 506. If waste containing asbestos is produced by a building contractor whilst working on your home, it will be regarded as hazardous waste and cannot be disposed of as above. The contractor is responsible for the removal and disposal of the asbestos to a suitably licensed facility. The Environment Agency regulates such activity and provides advice on its waste web pages.
