What you can do to save water

  • Wash cars with a bucket not a hosepipe
  •  Install a 'save a flush' device which can save up to 1 litre of water per flush. To order one or more for free, visit the Waterwise website or contact Thames Water on 0845 9200 800
  • Only fill kettle up with the amount of water that you need

FACT: On average across the Thames Valley region, each person uses about 160 litres of water per day. Two thirds of this water is used by washing and flushing the toilet.

  • Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth

FACT: If you switch the tap off while you're brushing your teeth you can save up to six litres of water per minute!

  • Have a shower instead of a bath

FACT: Did you know that one bath is enough for two 5-minute showers? A bath uses 80 litres of water compared to only 35 litres used by a shower. Be careful though, a power shower can use more water than a bath!

  • Only use your dishwasher or washing machine when it is full. A full load uses less water than two half loads

Water Butts

Rainwater can be easily collected in water butts. You can then use it instead of tap water to water plants - indoors and outdoors - wash the car and for other outdoor jobs. If you would like to purchase a water butt, please go to Thames Water  or call 0845 9200 800.
