Hazardous household waste and paintHazardous household wasteIf you have any items that may be unsafe to dispose of in the usual way, please contact Oxfordshire County Council on 08450 50 45 50 for free advice on safe disposal. Oxfordshire County Council no longer offer a free doorstep collection of hazardous household waste. However, most household and garden chemicals are accepted for disposal at the waste and recycling centres (tips). For more information about disposing of asbestos, please Oxfordshire County Council's website. PaintOxfordshire County Council's waste and recycling centres are unable to accept liquid paint, as it could contaminate landfill sites, so if you can't use it up or find it a good home by giving it away you will need to harden it before disposal. You can buy a paint hardener, or add sawdust, sand or soil to the tin and leave the lid off until the paint becomes solid and dry (please pierce the dried paint before taking it to a waste and recycling centre to make sure it's fully hardened). Clean and dry metal paint tins can be thrown into the scrap metal banks at any waste and recycling centre, but plastic or tins with hardened paint in must be landfilled. If your waste paint is still usable you could instead donate it to the Orinoco Scrapstore in Oxford for reuse by someone else. |
