Old Prebendal - back home after the flood
Residents and staff at the Old Prebendal Nursing Home Few people in West Oxfordshire will forget the unprecedented rainfall and flooding in July. With Brize Norton recording the highest ever day's rainfall on 20 July. About 1600 homes and 72 businesses were affected, including 3 homes for the elderly. Wonderful to be back... The 16th century Old Prebendal Nursing Home in Shipton under Wychwood has no history of flooding. But when the River Evenlode burst its banks on the Friday night the home was soon cut off and everyone moved to the upper floors. The following morning the Fire Service safely evacuated all 51 residents by boat, the youngest resident being 75 years old. Proprietor Noel Kelly describes the period afterwards as being 'like an emotional roller coaster'. He said: "Although the home was closed, staff were still caring for residents either out in the community or in other nursing homes. Wherever possible, we wanted to ensure they had a familiar face looking after them. On top of all this the home had to be gutted, dried and completely renovated." Three months later 95 year-old Diana Krämer was one of the first residents to move back to the Old Prebendal. Describing her experiences she said, "I must pay tribute to the amazing kindness of everybody who cared for me. What an adventurous life for an old woman of 95, who thought she would 'stay put' until the end of her days. It is, however, wonderful to be back." At the time of the flood the District Council's housing services and Oxfordshire County Council's Social Services sections worked together to find emergency alternative accommodation. |
