The following preparations may help if your property is at risk of flooding:

  • Keep outside drains clear to let surface water escape
  • Direct water flow away from property if possible
  • Use sandbags or rubbish bags filled with earth to protect doorways and low air vents / airbricks
  • Make wooden dams that can be easily placed in doors and thresholds
  • Switch off gas and electricity supplies and have emergency provisions ready
  • Protect food and valuables by moving them upstairs
  • Contact neighbours to help each other out
  • Listen to weather and news bulletins
