Frequently asked questionsQuestionWill I qualify for benefit? Answer Your income is compared to a government needs allowance known as your Applicable Amount. If your income is less than, or the same as your applicable amount you will get maximum benefit. This will be your eligible rent and/or council tax less any deductions for other people who live in your household if applicable. These deductions are known as Non Dependant deductions. If your income is more than your applicable amount you are expected to use a percentage of the excess income towards payment of your rent/council tax. The percentages are 65% for rent and 20% for council tax. If the 65/20% of your excess income is less than your rent or council tax you will get the difference between the eligible rent and council tax as benefit less any deductions for Non Dependants. If the 65/20% of your excess income is more than your eligible rent/council tax you will not be entitled to benefit. If the total of the deductions for Non Dependants is more than your rent or council tax you will not be entitled to benefit. back to FAQ listing |
