News Centre14 May 2008 (archived) Compost for allotmentsCompost, made from green waste collected in West Oxfordshire has been donated by Agrivert Ltd to Witney allotments as part of Compost Awareness Week. "The soil in the Witney area is clay-ey and so the compost will lighten it up and make an excellent mulch for feeding the plants and improving its structure. "This compost delivery gives us the opportunity to see the quality of recycled green waste and we will possibly buy in even bigger loads later this year. " About allotments in general she said "Being an allotment holder has really taken off in the last few years and we have 120 people on our waiting list. "We are really desperate for more sites so would love to hear from anybody who has an acre or so of land that they don't want and which would be suitable for allotments. "Keeping an allotment is a real community thing. Once you rent one it's your space to do what you want for a year and is a great opportunity for self expression whether you want to grow your own veg or plant rows of flowers for cutting or showing. "You get a lot of exercise through an allotment and most of us walk there and back home pushing our wheelbarrows. "Growing our own produce is good for the environment as it involves zero food miles. Allotment holders also produce lots of their own compost and the sites are good havens for local wildlife." A total of six tonnes of compost has been delivered to allotments on the Hailey Road, Newlands and Lakeside. back to what's new listing |
