Recycling trial takes to the streets

In a bid to cut down on street litter and boost recycling, West Oxfordshire District Council is trialling new style recycling litter bins.

Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for Environment said, "The trial of the new litter bins will allow people to recycle plastic bottles, cans, paper/magazines when they are out and about, rather than putting them into bins that go to landfill. It is something residents have been asking for and it will support recycling being done in the home.

"Although this is a small scale trial it will give us an indication of the amount that can be collected. We will also see if the bins work in practice as it is essential that people only put the correct materials in the bins otherwise they cannot be recycled.

"If the trial is successful we would like to roll it out across the District."

The bins will be emptied daily and their use will be monitored over the next 6 months.

Four bins are being used in the trial, two on Church Green and two on Market Place in Witney. These are in addition to the existing litter bins.

Pupils from nearby Henry Box School on Church Green are already using the bins and Deputy Headteacher, David Bell said, "Learning about the environment is an important part of education and our school council, called Student Voice, has its own Environment Committee. We encourage recycling in school and each week six large commercial waste bins are filled for recycling."
