Shire Horse sculptures

Local artist Sophie Thompson won the commission to create two sculptures for Kilkenny Lane Country Park as part of the Brize Norton and Carterton Public Art programme.

Sophie is fascinated by animal forms and very particular about translating their movement into her sculpture. She often works with so-called 'redundant' farm machinery.

The two life size Shire Horses remind us of a time gone by when these fine animals were used widely on the nearby farmland.

Each horse is made using approximately 1,200 lengths of concrete re-enforcing rods. Each weighs one tonne.

As part of her work Sophie also led workshops in both St John the Evangelist Primary School in Carterton and Brize Norton Primary School.
