RAF Brize Norton

RAF Brize Norton is the largest RAF station in the UK, located in West Oxfordshire between Brize Norton village and Carterton.

The station employs around 3,900 service personnel and 600 civilians and plays an important role in the local community.

Expansion

RAF Brize Norton is being expanded and will become the single air movement base for the military in the UK when RAF Lyneham, near Swindon in Wiltshire, closes. Around 2,500 troops will relocate from Lyneham to Brize Norton as part of the expansion, which is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2012.

The expansion means that more MOD houses are being built in West Oxfordshire and more troops and their families will be moving to the local area. Our Council is working with the MOD and other public authorities to assist where necessary and prepare for more people coming into our District.

Repatriations

Repatriations of fallen service personnel now come through RAF Brize Norton. A memorial garden has been constructed along the repatriation route. A campaign to raise funds for a memorial bell has now reached its target and the bell will be installed in Spring 2012. The bell is being made by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London, which cast Big Ben.

For further details and timings of any repatriations please see:
