Health & Wellbeing in West Oxfordshire

West Oxfordshire District Council does not provide the main health services. NHS Oxfordshire is  responsible for commissioning health services including GPs, community hospitals, Out of Hours GP services and Minor Injuries Units. Information is on their NHS Oxfordshire website.

For social care services, Oxfordshire County Council's Access team is the first point of contact on 0845 050 7666.

A detailed A-Z of Health and Wellbeing related services is attached to this site.  There is also a link to the Council's health related services

Hospitals

The three major hospitals in Oxfordshire are provided by the Oxfordshire Radcliffe Hospitals Trust and information on them can be found on their website.

Local Community hospitals in Chipping Norton and Witney are managed by Community Health Oxfordshire as well as some local community services.

Health & Wellbeing work of the Council

Here at West Oxfordshire District Council, we provide a number of services that protect health and enhance the wellbeing of our residents.  Please check the handy A-Z of our health and wellbeing services for details.  The West Oxon Health and Wellbeing Strategy summarises the health related aims over the next few years for us and our health partners.

We have dedicated webpages for children and young people and also for our older residents.

Our Leisure and Tourism team provide a number of leisure facilities and sports and leisure development opportunities , all designed to help residents health.  They also work on projects promoting arts and  tourism and leisure activities.

Changes to the health service

Currently the Council is working with partners on the current proposed changes to the health service.  This includes the removal of Primary Care Trusts (NHS Oxfordshire) and Strategic Health Authorities, handing over responsibility for commissioning health services to GP Commissioning Consortia. In Oxfordshire, this will be an overarching county wide consortia with six geographically based sub groups.

Public health will become the responsibility of local authorities, primarily county councils, as will setting up of new Health & Wellbeing Boards.  For patient involvement, the current LINKS service will become Healthwatch and take on a larger role.

For any information or to raise any issues, please ring us on 01993 861349.  The Cabinet Member with responsibility for health is Cllr Mark Booty.
