Getting extra financial help

In some circumstances the council may be able to award you an additional payment to help with additional housing costs. These are known as Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP).

These are not payments of Council tax benefit. They are awarded on a case-by-case basis for help with housing costs.

Each year the Council is given a cash limit for DHP awards. this means that most awards are only given for a limited period of time.

Payments can not be awarded for;

  • heating
  • lighting
  • water
  • sewerage
  • meals
  • laundry

You can apply for DHP by downloading the form in the downloads area and returning it to us.

Once your application has been assessed we will send you notification of the decision.

If you disagree with the decision made you cannot appeal against it as awards are at the Council's discretion. However if you would like to discuss the decision please contact us.
