Property Occupier ReductionsIn some circumstances, certain occupiers can be disregarded for Council Tax purposes. These circumstances and the exemptions they could be entitled to are described below. Students Main Home This exemption can be applied to properties which are the main home of, and only occupied by, students.
If you make an application for this exemption, you will be asked to provide a certificate to confirm your student status. Inhabited by a Member of a Visiting Force This exemption can be awarded to properties occupied by a member of a visiting force. Please ask your Base for a letter to support your application. Solely Occupied by Under 18s A property which is occupied solely by under 18's could qualify for this exemption. Severely Mentally Impaired A property which is solely occupied by persons who are Severely Mentally Impaired could be granted an exemption. For the purposes of this exemption, a person is said to be Severely Mentally Impaired when they; "have a severe impairment of intelligence and social functioning (however caused) which appears to be permanent". Annexe Occupied by Dependant Relative This exemption can be applied where the dwelling forms part of a single property including at least one other dwelling and is the sole or main residence of a dependant relative of a person who is resident in that other dwelling (or one of the other dwellings).
