SHELTERED HOUSING

Sheltered Housing allows many people who may need extra support to continue to live independently. It is designed for people who are of retirement age but younger persons may be considered if they have a need for the support provided, it is not the same as residential care or nursing homes.

People in sheltered housing can enjoy their independence, with the added security of knowing that help is available if and when they need it.

A Community Support Officer either resident or mobile is available who will check on your well being to ensure that support that is needed is provided.

There are a number of sheltered schemes in the District, some are in the towns of Witney, Carterton and Chipping Norton and others within village communities.

Priority is given to rehousing persons aged 60 or over either living in West Oxfordshire or wanting to come to this area for support from close relatives but applications from younger people who need this type of accommodation with support will also be considered. Applicants need to be registered on the Councils Waiting List.

To apply you should complete an application form 'Application for accommodation in West Oxfordshire', which you can request from the Publications section of the site or by contacting Housing Services. You should indicate on the application form whether you wish to rent or buy on a shared ownership basis.

If you are already a tenant of a housing association and resident in the District, you will need to complete a transfer application form.

HELPING YOU STAY IN YOUR OWN HOME

West Oxfordshire Home Improvement Agency

The Home Improvement Agency has been set up to help elderly or disabled home owners or tenants to remain in their own homes. We can help with advice and guidance in respect of repairs, improvements or adaptations to your property including applying for a grant if appropriate.

If an application for a grant is appropriate the Home Improvement Agency will;

Help complete application forms
Draw up a specification of works required to the property
Organise arranging estimates from at least two contractors
Oversee the works while they are being carried out

SMALL REPAIRS

The Home Improvement Agency also offers a Small Repairs Service for carrying out repairs such as replacing tap washers or broken glass, fitting door and window locks, minor electrical work, installing smoke detectors, fitting keysafes or repairing woodwork. They cannot however carry out large scale decorating or gardening work, gas work or electrical work. The service is available to;

Anyone over 70
Anyone over 60 and on benefits
Homeowners and private tenants
Residents within the West Oxfordshire area

LIFELINE TELEPHONE ALARM SERVICE

The Lifeline Service provides a light-weight alarm button on a cord which is worn around your neck and works in your home and garden. When pressed, the pendant will send a signal to a control centre. Your details are displayed on a computer screen, whereby a trained member of staff will contact your friends and family.

COTTSWAY COMMUNITY SUPPORT SERVICE

The Community Support Service is a regular visiting service provided for

older people,
people with disabilities,
People living alone,
People with health problems

The frequency of the visits is to suit you and your needs, and could be once a week, or once a day from Monday to Friday. It is delivered by a group of trained professional people who can support you to live independently in your home.

Abbeyfield UK

Abbeyfield houses provide Supported Sheltered housing. The houses are either purpose built or adapted from existing buildings with added facilities to make them suitable. A typical supported sheltered house offers;

Well maintained family sized houses.
A house manager.
No cooking, bills or repairs to worry about.
Freedom to come and go as you please.
A balance of privacy, support and security.
The freedom to furnish and decorate your room to your taste.
A friendly and supportive environment.
Professional staff on hand to provide emergency assistance through a call alarm system.
No strict rules other than those of common courtesy.

Who is Abbeyfield for?

Anyone over 55 years of age who would enjoy living in a house with a group of other residents and is sufficiently mobile. Abbeyfield is open to all, preference is normally given to Applicants in greatest need. There is no upper age limit.

Abbeyfield have one house in West Oxfordshire.
