Information on private rentingThe Deposit Guarantee SchemeMost landlords ask for a deposit before a tenant moves into privately rented accommodation. If tenants are eligible, the District Council will issue a Deposit Guarantee Bond in place of a cash deposit. The bond gives compensation to landlords for the cost of making good any loss or damage to the accommodation up to a maximum of one months rent. The scheme may be able to suggest potential tenants to landlords interested in accepting a bond so that vacancies can be filled quickly and without having to pay an Agent. To avoid misunderstanding and disputes, a full inventory is compiled free of charge before the tenancy begins. How it WorksAny landlord wishing to advertise a property can use the West Oxfordshire District Accommodation List, which is a weekly list that is available free of charge from the Town Centre Shop, 3 Welch Way, Witney or the Citizens Advice Bureau. There is no charge to you for advertising a vacancy on the list, and does not mean that Housing Benefit must be accepted, although you will increase your chances of a speedy let if you consider a wide range of potential tenants. Your prospective tenant must apply for the bond, and the inventory must be completed, before they move in. Application forms and further details are available by contacting Housing Services or Tel 01993 861010. Applications are normally assessed and completed within five working days.
