The West Oxfordshire Design Guide was formally adopted as a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) on 27 September 2006. The Guide provides design advice appropriate to both existing and future development in the District, and supplements the policies found in the West Oxfordshire Local Plan 2011. Any person aggrieved by the SPD may, within three months of the adoption date, apply to the High Court for a judicial review of the decision to adopt the SPD.

The Guide provides a wealth of design advice for West Oxfordshire, on everything from the colour of a front door to the layout of a new housing area. It seeks to describe the qualities and characteristics that make West Oxfordshire special - its landscapes, settlements and buildings - and to describe the ways in which good design can protect and enrich the character of the District.

The Guide underwent a period of public consultation in April 2006. We received a range of comments on its structure and contents and the document was updated to reflect these responses. On September 27, 2006 the West Oxfordshire Design Guide was formally adopted by cabinet as a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), making it a material consideration in the determination of planning applications.

Printed copies of The Design Guide are available at a cost of £30.00 (plus £1.50 p+p) from the Council offices (Elmfield, New Yatt Road, Witney, OX28 1PB) and from Visitor Information Centres in West Oxfordshire.

The original Design Guide consultation documents were accompanied by a Preparation and Consultation Statement and a Sustainability Appraisal Report.
