New Driver Application
To obtain your dual driver or private hire driver licence you must submit an online application and prove that you meet eligibility criteria, have passed background and driving checks, and have completed required training courses.
You must provide all supporting evidence at the time of submission so please ensure you have everything ready before you apply. Our step by step guide will go through what you need in more detail and inform you of the specific requirements. We've also designed a checklist to help you gather the information you'll need to support your application in a logical order.
What you will need
- Photo of driving licence
- Evidence that you have passed the Driving Assessment Test/acceptable alternative
- Safeguarding Training Certificate (Training course must be completed every three years)
- A criminal record check (or Certificate of Good Conduct) from all countries outside of England, Wales and The Republic of Ireland you have resided in since the age of 18
- Evidence that you have passed the knowledge test. You can book this via our website.
- Medical Report (if applicable) (must be less than 4 months old at date of application)
- DBS Certificate (if applicable) (must be less than 1 month old at date of application) (be registered on the DBS Update Service)

You will need to renew your driver's licence every 3 years. Once you have attained your driver’s licence you will also need to apply for a vehicle licence for any vehicle you intend to drive. Please see our Hackney Carriage and Private Hire pages for further information.
