Dangerous wild animals

Certain animals are listed as being dangerous and although you can buy them, you need a Dangerous Wild Animal Licence to keep them. The aim is to ensure that where private individuals keep dangerous wild animals they do so in circumstances which create no risk to the public and safeguard the welfare of the animals. A full list of the types of animals that require a licence can be found in the guidance notes.

The licence is valid for two years.

The application fee for a:

  • new application is £335 and recharge of veterinary fees
  • renewal application is £295 and recharge of veterinary fees

What happens next

Before deciding an application we must consider a report from a veterinary surgeon or practitioner detailing whether the premises are suitable.
